Sending 3K troops to West Africa to help with ebola

Posted: Sep 16, 2014

Can someone please explain to me why we are sending 3K troops to West Africa to help with ebola?  I guess it is the humintarian thing to do but as deadly as this is and the fact that those 3K will be returning to the states and could potentially bring this back with them.....call me crazy but I think this is just stupid stupid stupid.

I am guessing. - sm

The troops are most likely being sent over to build a field hospital or two and take supplies and then leave the area. When there is a shortage of beds, sick people have no choice but to go home and potentially infect others. Field hospitals are needed to quarantine the disease.

Doing nothing and allowing the disease to spread would be stupid, stupid, stupid.

Heard on radio yesterday that - we spent lots

[ In Reply To ..]
more on SARS response than Ebola and it only killed about 650?? people in total. This is much bigger and we are spending much less---racism is the answer they came up with. It was also suggested that it could have been economic interest. China produces and participates in economy of the world more than Africa.

The article explains that they will be organizing and coordinating response to the outbreak and building facilities to handle patients. I also heard in that interview that they are sending patients with symptoms back home because they don't have room for them unless they are more florid. They really need more facilities.

And as to our troops going, well, we protect the world and this is at least a humanitarian protection. If we don't go and face this enemy and contain it it can seep its way in and kill us. Frankly, I am surprised we haven't seen more of it yet with air travel.

They are already saying it is mutating and can now be contracted via air. - We're doomed.

Great surprise--Debate as to airborne - Ebola

[ In Reply To ..]
All scientists do not agree. But the scientist I just saw being interivewed said he does not believe it is mutating--said in biology anything is possible, but he was thankful for the supposition that it was airborne because he thinks it has drawn more attention to the situation which he thinks is pretty serious...I think they said 36,000 cases by October?

Debate on "global warming," too. - Not all agree.

[ In Reply To ..]
So, to me, this says we should always err on the side of caution.
So you believe in global warming? - That 's good

No, I don't have an opinion on global warming or climate change. - sm

From what I hear, both sides make sense. So, to err on the side of caution, let's go green and conserve whenever, wherever and however we can.

much to worry about. When was the last time any of us even talked to another human being in person? Just stock up on all your survival supplies, hoard toilet paper and powdered milk, and ya'll will be jes' FINE.

Heh, I haven't had the flu in 20 years. - Thank goodness I'm a shut in.

very stupid - cindy

That's the stupidist thing I've heard through this administration lately. They would be better off in Iraq. Is that what we do we find out there is a deadly virus abroad and we run over there as fast as we can. How ridiculous.

Not stupid. If it isn't stopped there, then yes - it WILL spread to the U.S. - SM

The other consideration is that if it progresses too far in the current countries it's in, it could seriously affect the economy and stability there, which ultimately ends up affecting us.

Better "boots on the ground" helping to set up treatment & quarantine centers so the doctors can do their jobs, than to have boots on the ground in the future to fight a war there, too.

Communication And Ebola Patient In DallasOct 01, 2014
Today's Ebola news shocker (not!!) is that information obtained from a diligent and thorough nurse failed to make into clinical decision making, and the patient was sent home with antibiotics for undiscovered Ebola. Properly handled, the patient would have gone into isolation at that time, and been treated with appropriate supportive measures, and not spent 2 additional days exposing others to the virus. If many more Ebola cases occur as a result of this totally commonplace error on the p ...
