care packages for college

Posted: Sep 7, 2014

I'm sponsoring one of our college kids from church (asked to pray for and send occasional card/note). Would like to send some "care packages" but don't know what a college boy would like. Any ideas? Thanks !;

Depends on the college. Google it and see what is available nearby. Don't duplicate what he can just buy there; it is a waste of postage. He can also shop using Amazon; they offer free shipping with reduced-rate Prime.

If he is totally in the sticks, any food items are good. Anywhere else, light weight snack foods like chips, trail mix, popcorn, cookies, cheese and crackers, jerky, and salami sticks. Home-made treats like Chex mix, brownies, and Rice Krispie treats are always good.

Postage on packages like that is expensive enough that gift cards might be better. Just send a reliable gift card that has no fees and does not expire, like Target.

...and he loves anything edible, lol. I also send him cool pens, sticky note pads, etc. A gift card to fast food places or gas stations is appreciated too.

Here is a random list of things you might consider sending. Hope this helps.

1. Ramen noodles.
2. Packages of cheese crackers with peanut butter or cheese in them.
3. Beef jerky.
4. Gift cards for pizza or McDonald's, etc. You can get McD cards in $5 increments, I think.
5. Powdered drink mix like Kool-Aid singles, etc.
6. Fruit roll-ups.
7. Canned nuts...peanuts, cashews, etc., or buy them by the 99 cent bags.
8. Sunflower seeds. REAL popular here in the south during baseball season in particular.
9. Microwave popcorn.
10. Microwave meals like ravioli, spaghetti-o's, etc.
11. Band-aids and antibiotic ointment.
12. Disposable razors.
13. Dental floss.
14. Gift cards to grocery stores, iTunes, movies, etc.
15. A travel mug for coffee.
16. Home baked goodies (They don't get homemade at school.) If sending cookies, don't send the buttery type, put them in a big Ziploc bag with a slice of bread to keep them fresh.
17. Instant oatmeal.
18. School supplies...yes, they still need pens, paper, spiral notebooks, sticky notes, etc.
19. Light bulbs for his desk lamp.
20. Toiletries...soap, toothpaste, etc.
21. Rolls of quarters for vending machines, laundry, and car washes.
22. Dried fruit snacks.
23. Mac and cheese in the little microwave cups.
24. Healthy snack bars/granola bars.
25. Lip balm/Chapstick.
26. Hand warmers if they are in a cold location.
27. Vitamin C and zinc lozenges for colds.
28. Card games like Uno or Phase 10.
29. Hot cocoa mix.
30. Gum.
31. Mints.
32. Shower shoes so they don't pick up a foot fungus.
33. FEBREEZE! College boys are stinky!
34.

Does he live in a dorm or an apartment? Food is always good. You can't go wrong with a box of snacks. You can mix it up with some healthy stuff and pure study junk food. You could buy things that are really hard to buy for a broke college student like cleaners, soap, shampoo, garbage bags, TP, paper towels, and basically some of those expensive items that are hard to buy when you'd really like to get something to eat. Gift cards to local eateries is good as well as gift cards to the local grocery store.

If you're not in contact with the student directly, talk to his parents about what kinds of things he can use and what kinds of shopping/restaurants are nearby.

NoKo Threatens US With More 'unexpected Gift Packages'Aug 03, 2017
I do not want this to become a partisan post. There are enough fingers to be pointed in every direction. The question now is what can or should be done? I am disappointed that China isn't trying to tamp down NoKo. Instead, they perform a missile test as well. Meanwhile, SoKo and Japan are jittery, as they should be. ...

Health Care Reform-Question About Canadian Health CareDec 03, 2009
So....a friend is for our US health care reform (already retired and on Medicare) because he had no trouble going to Canada to get laser surgery on his eyes so he wouldn't have to wear glasses and states there is nothing wrong with the Canadian system....but, and I'm asking a serious question here, how long do people really wait for emergent surgery if they belong to the Canadian system versus the American system as we have it now? How did Canada get their health care system up and ru ...

College Books Jan 10, 2012
I signed both of my boys up today for classes at the community college.  Thank goodness I have a Pell grant for both of them that pays most of their tuition because books for 6 classes cost $800!!!!!  Yes I said 800, that was not a typo for only six classes.  Luckily, the 7th class my son already had the book from his previous calc class and they are using the same book this semester.  I could not believe that they told me that one of the books I could buy a new one for $157 ...

Paying For CollegeFeb 06, 2016
First, it would be means-tested.  No assistance would be offered to families who don't need it, and for those eligible for assistance, the amount would be based on the level of need.   Families at the poverty level would receive the greatest assistance and the amount would decrease as the family income level increases until hitting the "wealthy"cutoff of no assistance. Second, assistance would be based on the residual need AFTER taking into account scholarships or grants, if ...

Daughter Starting CollegeApr 27, 2013
Hello all - my daughter will be starting college in the fall and we are in the process of trying to find financial aid. Does anyone have info on how to get grants? Is there usually a family income max that would allow/disallow anyone from getting a grant? I know I will need to talk to the college's financial aid office but any info that can be passed along would be appreciated. We already completed the FAFSA and my daughter got a small loan through that, but she was not awarded any gran ...

I don't come on here very often but wanted to acknowledge that I saw your replies below.  I have completed the FAFSA and my daughter was able to get a very small unsubsidized loan, but not even enough to cover one semester.  I will try the suggestion of the forum.  My daughter will be going to a university and the realization of how much money this is going to cost is overwhelming... and then to think that all that money will be spent and she may not even be able to get ...

Anyone Successful Going Back To College, Need Some Financial AdviceFeb 04, 2012
I am 39 years old wanting to go back to college to become an RN.  I will start out for the first 2 years at the community college to finish those basic courses I didn't do 20 years ago.  When I went to school back right after high school my parents dealt with the financial aid.  Now that I am looking at it there are so many resources apparently out there to help find grant money and scholarships, but I'm getting nowhere, and more confused.  FIRST QUESTION:  I ...

Education - 2 Years Free Junior CollegeMar 04, 2015

The Unraveling Of Jane Sanders' Burlington CollegeJul 22, 2017
Sanders, wife of 2016 presidential candidate and Vermont senator Bernie Sanders, described herself when she was hired in 2004 as a "turnaround president." She orchestrated the college's move from a small, cramped campus to an expansive lakefront property in 2010. The sprawling green would give students space to relax. The small private college could have built dorms, townhouses and single homes on the 32-acre property. Some property could have been leased, perhaps to a restaurant or caf ...
