a question for faith community

Posted: Sep 1, 2014

I haven't been to this board in a long while.  This is not of high importance, but it bothers me (feeling less than loved) and I'd like to know if that is understandable or if my feelings are wrong.

My son-in-law was in construction not long ago (changed occupation).  Was told by my daughter he didn't have time to help with installing cabinents for us.  So, okay, I accepted that, and have been struggling to find an affordable option instead.  Now I learn that he is planning to go to South America in a few months to "help" a friend he has met whose family lives there and will help them build a house.

Part of me says family first.  Another part of me says I undoubtedly at my home's worst condition have it better than the poor folks way yonder.  and you say? (thanks)

You're probably right; those people's living conditions are probably far worse. But you too needed help and I can understand your disappointment. I believe sometimes well-meaning people put more value on helping strangers as more of a "mission" than helping their own. Perhaps he's hoping that this project (a stranger going to a foreign land to help) will show more clearly the love of God to the family being helped.

I think you have a right to your feelings, but I think if it was me, I'd at least try to let it go.

thank you - op

It could be he committed to the other job beforehand, and that's why he's busy.

It could be (if he is highly religious), he felt he had a "calling" to go there.

It could be it might be a lucrative financial opportunity for him in some way--not sure what, but it's possible.

It could be he's feeling the need for a challenge, and this would be a challenging project.

It could be he wants to see South America, and this is a way to do that.

You also have a right to ask, politely, why he chose to go there, or you could try to get more information before feeling badly about this whole thing.

What's Even More Odd Is The Black Community IdentifyingSep 15, 2012
There are many in the black community who don't consider OTHER people of mixed white-black races to be black - meaning, truly black. (Remember George Jefferson?  Hated Jenny, his son's girlfriend, because she was a "zebra", as he called her.  He also directed most of his disdain toward her MOTHER, regarding her as a traitor to her race for marrying a white man.  Like Archie Bunker, George wasn't an oddity, and that's why we all recognized them.  They were ...

I was let go from IMedX for not flexing due to low work on day shift.  Sorry, but I can't flex late night/overnight hours due to having a 4-year-old.  She comes first.  Transtech was understanding but this IMedX bunch is ruthless.  I have a new IC part-time job now with plenty of work during the day, M-F w/rotating weekends, where I'm treated fairly and the pay is good.  This is to pay bills and help with tuition.  I just registered for my first class sinc ...

that doesn't go away."  That is so true, even for the rest of us who have lived through and born witness to the pre- and post-civil rights eras.  I cannot pretend to know what the experience is like first-hand, but as an old white woman who's been sympathetic to civil rights issues and politically active for as long as I can remember, it is impossible to view the case outside of its historical context.  Ever since the verdict was given, I have been reliving those not-so- ...

So Donald Trump Doesn't Believe His Own Intelligence Community.Dec 12, 2016
You can bet that if HC won the election and the CIA said that the Russians hacked it to favor her, DT would be absolutely apoplectic, jumping up and down yelling that the election was rigged but, of course, since he won, the election was absolutely legitimate and the CIA is not to be believed.  It should frighten everyone to have a president who doesn't take intelligence briefings and does not believe his own intelligence community. ...

Black Community Waking Up To Life On The Liberal PlantationOct 28, 2014
Watch the video (link below). The way to help the poor - minority or otherwise - is to strengthen their families (not weaken them) and to invest in providing them the skills and abilities that so many employers are searching for - and not finding. More handouts won't do it.  Set-asides won't do it.  Minimum wage increases do nothing for people who don't have jobs in the first place - and drive out the few jobs there are.  And for sure, Obamacare isn't helping ...

Where Does Faith Come From?Oct 01, 2014
I am a 60-some-year-old woman who has no faith and no belief in God. I want to, I really do, but it's just not there. I went regularly to a Methodist church as a child, but not a particularly religious upbringing. I don't really remember what if any religious thoughts I had as a child. When I married, I converted to Catholicism simply because my husband was Catholic, though really in name only. We raised our two daughters as Catholic and they went to Catholic school and we att ...

How Do You Strengthen Your FaithDec 04, 2011
I hope this will not be long.  I just feel lost in my faith.  I grew up in a home where we gave thanks to the Lord, we were not getting on our knees every hour saying praise the Lord :-), but we said prayers at dinner, church and sunday school every week from time I could walk til graduation in high school.  Grandma was a sunday school teacher at an episcopalean church and played the organ/piano there, we went to Sunday church dinners and stuff like that.  Then around grade 5 ...

I was leaving for work this morning (it was mid-morning, I was goingin late as I had to wait for the gas company to come) and I saw 4 well-dressed people exit a car. I immediately guessed correctly what they were doing, they were going to go to knock on doors to share their sects magazines. They stopped me as I was walking through the parking lot and were very friendly, so I was friendly back to them. I went ahead and took their papers and didn't bother to say anything about not b ...

God Is Testing Me, My Faith?Jul 06, 2011
What do you think when someone that's going through something horrible says 'God is testing me, my faith'? It's one of the many reasons I doubt there's a God....if there were, and one is a believer, why should they be tested? Sounds like torment to me, and why would someone that loves his children torment them in such a way? Would God (if there is a God) be so insecure that he'd need constant proof of one's faith? I thought God knows everything? So wouldn ...

How Can I Strengthen My Faith?Dec 16, 2014
Without going into all the devastating facts of what Nuance is doing to its domestic workforce, suffice it to say that I am a victim of the latest pay downgrade and am losing faith that something better will come my way. I am not looking to discuss ways to find another job (at this point). I am looking for ways to improve, increase and strengthen my faith in the Lord. I am a believer, but I am just struggling right now. Thank you. P.S. If you are atheist or have something negative to ...
