Needing some advice about the Cleveland, Ohio area

Posted: Aug 27, 2014

I am due to graduate the end of September with my bachelor's degree and am looking forward to getting out of this profession all together!  I am thinking I may move to the Cleveland area to start my new career (currently live in Missouri and it's too darn hot here!).  Any suggestions on safe areas to live in around Cleveland?  What neighborhoods should I avoid?

Any other words of wisdom would be greatly appreciated!    Smile

A little advice - to Birdy

Dress warm and wear clothes in layers.
Wear a scarf and hat.
Get some boots.
Learn to ice skate.
Stay off thin ice.
Don't live by the lake.
Get a snow blower.
Get snow tires.
Get an engine heater.
Learn to like ice hockey.
Develop winter hobbies, ceramics, bingo, needlework, knitting, sewing, baking.

All joking aside, Cleveland seems to offer a great deal as far as museums, theater, opera, etc., but after growing up in upstate NY and remembering the blizzards, getting 48 inches of snow in a weekend and getting as cold as -40F, would personally choose not to live in that climate unless I could afford to have a summer home and spend winters in the south (which is never going to happen). Try the city data site to get an idea of where to stay away from, which I find to have the most comprehensive information. If I were looking to make a move to that area, I would look at the smaller surrounding areas for a better quality of life.

Even if you are tired of the heat, there are a lot of places north that are not as tough in the winter as Cleveland. It's not much different as far as winter climate than any of the other cities in the north that are on the Great Lakes, or any lake for that matter in the winter. I don't know what type of work you are looking for, but if you can swing it, any of the cities along the Atlantic coastline would be much warmer in the winter. Good luck to you. For myself, I figure that when I move, if I don't like it where I am, I can always move.

Thank you for the reply! I appreciate it. - Birdy

Actually, I was born in the Windy City and spent 18 years as an adult living in Wisconsin; I am definitely no stranger to winter weather. In fact, one of the things I have missed the most the past four years that I have lived in Missouri is what I consider “normal” seasons. I moved to Missouri in August 2010, so my daughter could attend the college of her dreams; she graduated this past May and three weeks ago, she moved on to a new job in Wisconsin (lol), and now I am faced with being without children at home for the first time in my life. My degree will be in hospitality/culinary management, which I thought long and hard about before embarking on the journey of going to college; I wanted to choose a career path that could NOT be outsourced to another country!

One thing I will say, on a lighter note, is that at least I know the residents of Ohio KNOW how to drive in snowy weather, which is not the case here in Missouri, nor do they know how to use their directional/turn signal!! :0)

Honestly, I don’t mind the cold weather, and I have often joked with my kids when they were much younger that someday I would wind up in Alaska! Thank you for your suggestion of City Data; I have been looking at their website but have been having difficulties finding more current data.

I am very much in the same position as you; if I decide I don’t like where I’ve relocated to, I can always move again, as I only have myself and my three “kids” (cats) to worry about at this point.

Again, thanks for your response and the laughs I had reading your initial advice/suggestions. Much appreciated!

Come to Maine! Portland seems to be doing very well! - ETOHPRN

I live near Bangor, but if I could move, it would be down there in one of the burbs. I do love the ocean and there's lots to do that way, whether you are into the nature scene or the more upbeat "city" vibe without being city-ish. Does that even make sense? Plus, you're close enough to Boston if that kind of crazy is more your style. ;-)

Housing is more affordable than in Mass or southern New Hampshire, more job opportunities, and the tourists friggin' LOVE Maine! The weather can be wooly, but it doesn't seem to be too bad down there on the coast. Certainly not as bad as it can be inland or in the mountains.

Plus our accents friggin' rock and we have a wicked awesome sense of humor and we know how to eat! Lots of farm-to-table hippie stuff happening right now and people "from away" eat that whole vibe right up!

Check us out! We need some fresh young blood up in here. Whitest, oldest state in the country and all.
;-)

My mother is originally from Boston, I know where you're coming from with that comment! lol

I would think being on the East coast it would be expensive, much like Maryland and New Hampshire, no?
Yeah, those guys are expensive. Not here! - ETOHPRN

But it's all relative. Wages to tend to take a nosedive, especially the more north and west you go. I think in-town is expensive to live and play, but folks "from away" in more affluent areas think it's a heck of a deal.

We could never own a home back in Mass (which is where we are from originally) with all that sprawl and crazy property tax, same for NH, which is why we moved up here.

Winters are definitely a buzzkill though, and the older we get, the more the old bones ache, and an overdose of vitamin D pills is a must! One also does indeed learn to love wool socks and other woolen apparel as well. Haven't pushed the wool underwear envelope yet. Fur maybe ;-)

You absolutely have to have a sense of humor to survive here, especially if you are "not one of them," like we are. Ya can't be pretentious and you have to fail at something several times, and be seen doing it, and then own up to it and ask for advice from a seasoned native, to earn any kind of street cred. I'm awesome at this, as I tend to frig things up on a daily basis, and I'm wicked good at eating crow.

I used to drink, kind of a lot on my free time, and that got me into trouble. I'm dry now, over 2 years since the birth of our daughter, and I don't miss it one bit. There is a bit of an alcohol problem up here, as there sometimes can be not much to do and it keeps a body warm on cold winter days and nights. Read up on "Allens Coffee Brandy." It's got like a cult following up here.

Seriously, a fun place that will piss you off and make you curse like a sailor and at the same time can make you cry from the beauty and simple pleasures of little battles won.

Maine: It's good for bipolar folk. Aw yeah, THAT should be our state motto...to heck with the "Vacationland" it is now. Haven't met hardly anyone who lives here who can afford to take an actual vacation out of state.

Come visit! I can hook you up with a tent, some sleeping bags, a campfire and folding chair, so many twinkling stars your head will spin, and a really crappy cup of coffee when you wake up from the most solid sleep and sore back you've ever had in your life!
:-D

You're sitting right where I have my eye on heading. I'm hoping to be relocated from CA to ME within the next 18-24 months. I'm particularly interested in the Deer Isle/Stonington area but Bangor looks pretty darned appealing, too.

Maybe in the not-so-distant future we'll be neighbors!
Beautiful area there! - ETOHPRN

We've taken some Sunday drives out to those places and it is beautiful. Definitely drop me a line if you find yourself in this neck of the woods! Then at least you can say you know SOMEONE and may not feel totally like a fish out of water :)

Please, any information you are willing to share I would appreciate! As it is now just myself and my furry friends, I have many options available. What is the job market like in North Carolina?

Mayfield Heights, nice area (suburb outside Cleveland) I always thought, but its been a while since I was there. My cousins still live there though. My parents moved from there to Pennsylvania before I was born, to near Philadelphia. Definitely not as much snow as Cleveland. Cleveland gets pounded, talking a lot of snow. So unless you like snow (talking feet not inches) for five months I would not go there. PA is nice, though can get pretty hot and humid too, though nicer up in the mountains.

Needing Some Family Advice...Jun 28, 2011
I need some advice out there...I am trying desperately to cool off before broaching this subject with my sister.  First off, my sister is married with very young children and I am not with quite a bit older children.  Anymore when I am around my sister she takes it upon herself to critize my parenting.  For instance, my youngest plays sports, but this year it is a semi-traveling team.  I have a used car, compared to her new one.  I cannot afford a new one right now or a ...

Because Voting In Ohio Just Isn't Hard Enough..smAug 10, 2012
Ohio voting just got a little harder, not because early voting has been cut down, and not because of new ID restrictions. That's right. Republicans are doing everything in their power to ensure a win in Ohio. The latest tactic works on a county by county basis. You would think this would be a good thing to extend hours in this state right? ...
