Lindsey Graham - we should strike ISIS in

Posted: Aug 24, 2014

notifying Asaad.  Isn't that going to war with Syria?  Air strike in foreign country without notifying/consent from that government?  Or have we just decided that Asaad government needs to be taken out too, so we'll just take over Syria.

Are we really ready to get into the Middle East this way?  If we are in Syria, Iraq, (Israel), worse yet, unilaterally, won't that turn into a full scale war pretty quickly.  Personally, not ready for that 10-15 year commitment...and my sons are not either.

Just listening to British Amb to U.S. and they are pretty clear at not being involved in a full scale operation.  They are not interested in another Iraq War.

He wasn't any too complimentary about the equipment that was left behind in Iraq (to support the Iraqi military) that is now in the hands of ISIS.

America's Top Military Officer Explained The Big ISIS Problem In One Sentence

Michael B Kelley

“This is an organization that has an apocalyptic end-of-days strategic vision that will eventually have to be defeated.” -General Martin E. Dempsey, U.S. chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff

Gen. Martin Dempsey, America's top military officer, told a press briefing this week that the mere existence of ISIS is clearly a problem that had to be addressed.

The question now is how.

Demspey noted that destroying ISIS will require "the application of all of the tools of [U.S.] national power — diplomatic, economic, information, military."

In fact, as counterterrorism expert Brian Fishman explained, truly defeating ISIS would require full-scale war that would involve fighting in both Iraq and Syria.

"Can they be defeated without addressing that part of the organization that resides in Syria? The answer is no," Dempsey told reporters at the Pentagon.

That is where the real challenge lies for the Obama administration, which decided years ago that the U.S. was not going to “get in the middle of somebody else’s civil war.” ISIS has effectively blurred the border between Iraq and Syria, using the eastern Syrian city of Raqqa as a de facto capital while extending the terror group's reach in Iraq.

"The notion that the Iraq war can be separated from the Syrian civil war is pure fantasy," Shadi Hamid, an expert on Islamist groups at the Brookings Institution, told McClatchy. "This is what’s so worrying about the Obama administration’s approach. There is no plan. There is no vision on that front. There is no effort to talk about Syria in a different way."

A senior U.S. defense official also told McClatchy that there "is no policy" to confront ISIS in Syria.

syria iraq isis

Mike Nudelman/Business Insider

The administration is adamant that it will not work with Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, who has allowed ISIS to thrive while bombing and torturing Syrians on an industrial scale throughout the war.

"Now that ISIS has fully matured, the Assad regime and Iran offer themselves as partners to the United States," Bassam Barabandi, who served as a diplomat for several decades in the Syrian Foreign Ministry, explained in the Atlantic Council recently. "For the first time, Assad is striking ISIS in Raqqa and locations inside Iraq, in a perverse harvest of the terrorist seeds he planted to quash the civilian-led reform movement."

Administration officials told the Guardian that the favored long-term strategy to defeat ISIS is to train moderate Syrian rebels to fight both ISIS and the regime. But the non-jihadist rebels in the Free Syrian Army are now being decimated by both jihadists and the regime after years of being brushed aside as "former doctors, farmers, pharmacists and so forth" by President Obama.

Furthermore, funding for the training hasn't been approved by Congress and most of the critical details have not yet been worked out. Nevertheless, as Dempsey pointed out, something must be done, because ISIS must eventually be defeated.

"To counter ISIS, the United States must relearn the lessons of the surge [during the Iraq war]," Mike Doran, senior fellow in the Center for Middle East Policy, told Business Insider. "The key is to detach moderate Sunnis, the vast majority of Sunnis, from ISIS, by providing them with security and with a political alternative to rule by Iran and its proxies.

"The first step is to commit the United States, to crushing ISIS unambiguously," Doran continued. "The second step is to create a coalition to achieve that goal by creating a new order in what is now Jihadistan, the region that ISIS controls from Baghdad to Aleppo. That coalitions should include, among others, Saudi Arabia, Turkey, Jordan, France, Britain, and, of course, the Free Syrian Army."

CHICAGO, IL. — There is concern ISIS is targeting Chicago as part of its radical Islamic agenda.

An online war of words and disturbing images possibly include an implied threat to a Chicago landmark building.

A picture was found with Arabic writing taken in-front of a well known Chicago building.

The Old Republic Building is located at Michigan and South Water Street.

The apparent message in the photo dated June 20th of this summer is “soldiers of the Islamic state of Iraq and Syria will pass from here soon.”

Other tweets show the same two pictures saying “we are in your state/ we are in your cities / we are in your streets. You are our goals anywhere.”

More tweets say, “we are here #america near our #target :) sooooooooooooon.”

It’s not known who posted the picture in Chicago or why they chose that location.

After alleged Islamic terrorists threatened Chicago and Washington D.C., on Twitter, the government is begging local police to remain vigilant.

The FBI and the Department of Homeland Security issued a bulletin Friday urging all local officials to be on the lookout for possible ISIS threats and homegrown terror.

The bulletin said there are currently no "specific, credible threats against the Homeland," but still warned law enforcement officials to be on high alert, especially after the terrorist group beheaded kidnapped American journalist James Foley earlier this week, ABC News reported.

The notice pointed to one specific tweet which claimed fighters were already in major U.S. cities, such as Chicago and Washington D.C., and mysteriously declared: "You are our goals anywhere."

The tweet posted on Aug. 9, used the hashtag "#AmessagefromISIStoUS and the text "We are in your state. We are in your cities. We are in your streets."

The message also included photos of an ISIS flag in front of the White House and Chicago's Old Republic Building, seeming to imply ISIS fighters are already in the country. Time stamps on the photos were from June 20.

It's unclear who posted the ominous threat.

In Friday's bulletin, the federal agencies explained that it's difficult to predict triggers for radical violence.

The two groups released the alert bulletin after noticing ISIS — and online users claiming to be associated with ISIS — using social media to encourage English-speaking Muslims to join fighters in Syria.

The groups emphasized that all current threats to the U.S. are not credible but said they could not rule out any future attacks by ISIS sympathizers.

Among other big U.S. cities, Chicago is seen as a specific threat because of President Barack Obama's ties to the area.

"Many terror organizations refer to Chicago as Obama Town," Ross Rice, a former FBI agent, told CBS Chicago.

The Islamic State has expressed anger toward the U.S. leader, especially after he approved an airstrike campaign against the terrorist group.

In retaliation for those airstrikes, ISIS fighters released a video of a masked terrorist brutally beheading Foley earlier this week.

In the gruesome execution video, the savage terrorist said ISIS will kill another hostage, TIME magazine journalist Steven Sotloff, if Obama and his administration do not meet ISIS' demands.

"The life of this American citizen, Obama, depends on your next decision," the masked executioner said in the footage.

So you feel unsafe with President Obama in office, what would you have him do now? Go to war. That activity might make you feel more safe, but more likely you will just be distracted.

A U.S. senator warned on Thursday that ISIS, the militant terror group sweeping across Iraq, aims to destroy an American population center and is working on a plan to do it.

'They're crazy out there and they're rapidly developing a method of blowing up a major U.S. city and people just can't believe that's happening,' Republican Sen. Jim Inhofe told the Fox-25 television in Oklahoma City.

Inhofe, the ranking GOP member of the Senate Armed Services Committee, warned that leaders of ISIS 'are really bad terrorists. They're so bad even al-Qaeda is afraid of them.'

Rep. Jim Bridenstine, a fellow Oklahoma Republican and a committee member, told the Tulsa World that ISIS Islamists are 'cutting children's bodies in half. They're shooting them. I've never seen anything like it.'

The Oklahoma senator warned that the US faces a novel and potentially catastrophic threat from ISIS, and said President Barack Obama isn't up to the task of defeating the terror group

The warnings came after a stomach-churning video released Tuesday showed the beheading of American photojournalist James Foley at the hands of an ISIS militant, and on the heels of a press briefing where Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel said the U.S. military's job is to 'get ready' for whatever battle might lie ahead.

ISIS is 'as sophisticated and well-funded as any group that we have seen,' Hagel said, appearing alongside Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Gen. Martin Dempsey.

'They're beyond just a terrorist group,' Hagel said. 'They marry ideology and a sophistication of strategic and tactical military prowess. They are tremendously well funded. ...This is beyond anything we've seen, so we must prepare for everything.'

'It's a long-term threat,' he conceded under questioning from reporters, adding moments later that 'the president has been very clear on mission creep. And he's made it very clear that he will not allow that.'

Gen. Dempsey warned that America's involvement in Iraq will continue for years to come, citing the intensity of hatred among ethnic, religious and tribal groups there.

'The conflict against those groups – most of which are local, some of which are regional, and some of which are global in nature – that's going to be a very long contest,' he said.
Rep. Jim Bridenstine said if America is going to do battle with ISIS, 'we have to win'

Rep. Jim Bridenstine said if America is going to do battle with ISIS, 'we have to win'

'It's ideological. It's not political. It's religious in many cases. So, yes, it's going to be a very long contest.'

Bridenstine said hours later that 'if we're going to do these kinds of operations, we have to win.'

But a frustrated Inhofe said Thursday night that he fears President Obama isn't up to the task, despite the tough words he delivered Wednesday before hitting the golf course.

'Obama's lofty rhetoric is undermined by fainthearted follow-through and lack of meaningful action,' he told the World.

'The president's limited strikes in Iraq have not halted ISIS' momentum but only temporarily redirected it,' said Inhofe. 'Without sustained pressure, ISIS will regroup and continue its campaign of terror.'

'We're in the most dangerous position we've ever been in as a nation,' he told Fox-25.

A top Marine general agreed on Wednesday, writing on the DefenseOne website that if the U.S. military doesn't 'eradicate' ISIS now more attacks on the West will come.

General John Allen praised Obama for the ordering airstrikes on ISIS camps in northern Iraq, but he urged him to 'move quickly to pressure the organisations entire "nervous system," break it up, and destroy its pieces.'

'The U.S. is now firmly in the game and remains the only nation on the planet capable of exerting the kind of strategic leadership, influence and strike capacity to deal with IS[IS],' he wrote.

'It is also the only power capable of organizing a coalition's reaction to this regional and international threat.'

‘This group,' he wrote, 'is not a flash in the pan that will go away of its own accord or if we don’t poke at it.'

Allen also denied that the U.S. military was war weary, saying it's fully capable of attacking and reducing ISIS.

‘We should do it now, but supported substantially by our traditional allies and partners, especially by those in the region who have the most to give – and the most to lose – if the Islamic State’s march continues.'

‘If we delay now, we will pay later.'

The president told a global audience this week from his Martha's Vineyard vacation spot that the U.S. 'will continue to do what we must do to protect our people.'

'We will be vigilant and we will be relentless. When people harm Americans, anywhere, we do what's necessary to see that justice is done.'

'We act against ISIL, standing alongside others,' Obama added, hinting at his 'coalition' strategy rather than a plan to strike unilaterally with overwhelming American force.

Inhofe, though, warned that without a concrete plan, Obama's words ring hollow.

'You have to come up with something that we're going to do,' the senator said, 'because they're holding another hostage in place.'

'And the problem is, the president, quite frankly – he says all these things and he never does them.'

With the right strategy, he added, the U.S. could defeat ISIS on its home turf before the threat arrives on America's doorstep.

'This idea that they're coming and infiltrating the United States – sure, some are coming in who have had an association with ISIS. But the majority of them are still over there,' he said.

The senator also defended the United States government's sweeping intelligence programs that have drawn barbs from civil libertarians, suggesting that information dragnets would play a part in keeping ISIS at bay.

'You have to have an intelligence process going on to stop attacks on America,' he said.

“All of these people on television, some of whom I have enormous respect for, it unsettles me to hear them say, listen, we the United States have to ‘do something’ in Ukraine, we have to ‘do something’ in Syria, we have to ‘do something’ in the waters around China, we have to ‘do something’ in Iraq, we have to ‘do something’ about ISIS. What they’re talking about are combat operations.

“My first question to anyone who’s on television saying ‘We have to get tough, we have to put boots on the ground, we have to go to war in one of these places’ is: I will hear you out if you tell me you are prepared to send your son, your daughter, your grandson, your granddaughter to that war for which you are beating the drums. If you aren’t I have no patience with you, and don’t even talk to me.”

Selective Service Registration

Federal law requires that every male United States citizen and male alien residing in the United States or its territories must register with the U.S. Selective Service System within 30 days of his 18th birthday.

ALSO,
you have no idea of the role economics plays in the decision making process of those that enter the service. Those that cannot afford college immediately after high school enlist---yeah, those are adults volunteering to go to war.

And, yes, I realize those are not the only people in the military, but there is a large group of people that make that choice, and they are the ones in the hot spots and on the ground first, in the front-line.

Dan Rather - is right

[ In Reply To ..]
Just a coincidence that none of Dick Cheney's extended family ever in the military? No Bushes, no Grahams, no McCains?

Hmmm, what do they all have in common? Oh yeah, they are all rich, they don't NEED to put their lives on the line because they are patriots or for decent benefits or educational benefits (which the GOP tries to take away every chance they get).

The military has, ever since probably the Korean war, taken poor and lower middle class and tossed them into horrible wars that they have no idea why they are there and what they are fighting for.

I completely agree if these people who are pushing for war, war, war had someone who mattered to them involved over wherever they want to go to war, they might be a bit more careful about committing to war and committing to what exactly, since the cost of THAT life might then not be so cheap to them.
