"Iraqis going to San Diego"

Posted: Aug 12, 2014

The headline from an article said Iraqis were going to San Diego, but they're not, they're going to a suburb of San Diego, El Cajon.  I grew up in El Cajon, which is a lower middle class community.  I'm ambivalent about the Iraqis going there.  Apparently El Cajon and Detroit have been key migration points for the Iraqis.  Already the mayor of El Cajon resigned because [from the 10 News Station website] "in an interview with Progressive magazine earlier this year, Lewis was quoted as saying some Chaldean schoolchildren who receive free lunches are "being picked up by Mercedes Benzes" and that once they come here, "it doesn't take them too long to learn where all the freebies are at."  I don't have a problem with his statement.  It bothers me that this population is going to put stress on an already stressed place.  Per Wikipedia, in 2010, El Cajon had San Diego county's highest poverty rate.

It also bothers me that Americans are expected to accommodate to this new population.  In Temecula, I saw some protesters claiming that a certain bank had "violated Sharia law."  C'mon!  Apparently in Sharia law, no interest is charged, BUT there are fees and charges for various things -- it's just not labeled "interest." Leave the Sharia law overseas.  We Americans are proud of our democracy -- people who come here are joining US.
