in-person job interview tomorrow

Posted: Aug 12, 2014

They took me by surprise calling me, since I applied several weeks ago.  it's for a nighttime part-time unit clerk position in a nursing home near me.  I am so nervous! I tend to be a blithering idiot when I am nervous :)  I don't think I have clothes to wear for an interview....sigh.  might need to go out and buy something, or at least decent sandals to wear with a skirt.

I know nothing really about the job, other than that I am quite sure I can do the required tasks.  I hope it's a set schedule, which would make it possible to go part-time with transcription and also still drive my kids to their activities at night.  If it's third shift, even better.  Mostly, I hope it's more than $10 an hour, or it wouldn't be worth it.  At least working on holidays doing MT still allows me to be home with the family.

Does anyone else do this type of job, who can give me some insight?

I know what you mean about being nervous...you are describing me. However, I recently took an "interviewing" class where we were recorded during a mock interview. I thought I was going to appear ridiculous/dumb/weird but when I watched it back I looked NORMAL. So you probably do not seem like the "blithering idiot" you think you do.

Sorry I can't tell you about the job, maybe someone else will post who can. Good luck!

Yay for you! - sm

Don't be swayed by the statement about catching everything in a nursing home. You can catch everything from touching a shopping cart at a grocery store or shaking hands at church. You'll build up an immunity after awhile, anyway. I worked in the school system when I was cutting down my MT hours from full time to part time. I never even got a cold, and believe me there were some nasty colds and flu going around. I took vitamins and made sure to wash my hands.

I think you'll enjoy the clerk job at the nursing home! You don't have to dress to the 9s for an interview, but you'll want to wear a pair of solid-color pants and a nice top. Don't go out and spend a lot of money on career clothes. Once you're a nursing home employee you'll probably wear scrubs, anyway. If you do wear sandals, I would wear hose with them, as it will look more professional than your bare toes. :)

Ask a friend or family member to practice interviewing with you. Here are some helpful websites with interview tips.

You already have the interview coming up, so you've passed the hardest part! They're interested in you, or they wouldn't have called you for an interview!

Good luck, and let us know how it goes.

You are not nervous, you are excited. Remember, it is all about them, not you, and they want to hear good positive things. How do you solve a problem? What would you do if *difficult situation*. How do you get along with . . . How have you solved a problem in your past? Why do you want to work there. (Note: Someone who wants to work odd shift is good, but that should not be the only reason--I once told an interviewer that I was glad it was close enough that I could run home for lunch--bad answer apparently).

thanks for those links! - MaMT

They are very helpful and I took a lot of notes :)

I think I have my interview outfit all set - I don't wear dress pants (just a preference) so I have a summery floral dress with a crocheted sweater over it (to cover my arms) and hose - I am a stockings girl - no bare legs here :) My daughter thinks it's maybe a bit over-dressed but I don't think so, plus it's what I have...

Well I think it went well - the only thing was that the hours are not very good in terms of my family. 4:30 to 8:45 Monday through Friday - early nights, no holidays! I forgot to even ask about pay range... I actually love the hours, but my husband probably won't and it will be a huge hassle in terms of dinner. I will wait and see if they offer the job.

Thanks for all your tips!

I'm so proud of you! - sm

I'm glad you found the links helpful in your interview! Your dress sounds perfect, and I am absolutely sure they will offer you the job! On the slight chance they don't, then at least you will have your interview outfit ready for the next opportunity. I agree those hours do cause difficulty with the dinner hour. Maybe your husband will say it's okay, and maybe you could tell the employer that if an earlier shift opens up you'd like to move into that. Be sure and let us know what happens!

Congrats, I hope you get it. - 4vrtpng

If they offer it, I would jump on it. If the money is worth it, you and your husband will work out the wrinkles, especially if you don't have to type any more. My day is coming soon where I get to give notice and believe me, my husband can't wait to not see me sitting at this computer wasting my life for less than minimum wage. Gook Luck.

If you needed the job enough to - apply for it ...

[ In Reply To ..]
I would not quibble too much about the hours. You need to look at the bigger picture ... you are doing this to get out of MT and into a job that has more room to move on.

So what if it interferes with dinner? Do you need the job or not? If you do and your family is so lazy that they expect a servant to feed them, make meals on your days off and freeze them. They can reheat them.

It isn't permanent or forever. You can look for a better position once you have this one, but you need to have this one in order to get something else.

One reason a lot of folks have trouble getting jobs is that they put up too many restrictions and requirements. This is an employer's market. You may have to take what you can get and be grateful you got it.

Good luck - sm

Take some time to look over their website so you know a little bit about their company. Have a few questions ready to ask so you appear interested in the job. Good luck!

Ham Q's....need To Know By Tomorrow! S/mDec 30, 2011
Hello all, I have people coming over to my house tomorrow (Sat) at 5 p.m.  I am planning to serve ham, sliced up for sandwiches. It is currently defrosted in my fridge as of today. It is a 10-12 pound half ham, not precooked or spiral sliced (I think.) Here are my questions: Can I cook it in my Nesco roaster instead of the oven? (Never used a Nesco before, have a 6-qt one still in the box!) If yes, how long do I cook it for and what goes in with the ham besides water? (I tried looking o ...

Going From Night Person To Morning Person - Not E-zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzNov 04, 2013
I keep waking up at 4:30 am - a job I'm just training for (a low-stress job and only 1 marathon week a month!) starts at 6 am.  So I'm trying to be a morning person.  Constitutionally I really don't like the idea of going to bed at 9 pm, or 10 pm.  Although I have more energy during the day when I follow a morning schedule. I'm afraid to read a book now, I think if I do I will fall asleep instantly.  The night is young!  ZZZZZzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz..... ...

Lol!   I have done every kind of report there is to do, I have been an MT for 25 yea ...

After watching that interview, I can only say Bill O'Reilly and FOX must be feeling pretty darn good right about now. To think that they hold such sway over America and her people.
