Every day more children killed with guns - sm

[ In Reply To ..]
I met a youth pastor (he's maybe 25), who in the course of recounting how our community had become more violent in certain areas, told us that he has a loaded gun next to his bed on his nightstand. The conversation immediately preceding had entertained us with what a wonderful toddler he had who was into everything. Guns are too prevalent in our society and just not necessary.

The problem is not with guns; it's society. I remember - when we used to take

[ In Reply To ..]
guns to school for shooting class (1960s). Each decade crime gets worse.

Guns, like computers, knife or even cars, are just a tool. It's how people use them.

Guns are immediately devastating and linked to angry - violence more than others

[ In Reply To ..]
I grew up in the 1960s also and there was no mention of guns in the classrooms in suburban St. Louis...none.
I grew up in Va. and we had shooting class. My - brother took his gun to
[ In Reply To ..]
school. Never had any problems.

The problem is with people.
Well this is society now - What do we do now?
[ In Reply To ..]
Less guns and more regulation because obviously we, as a society, haven't handled it so well.
We already have many gun regulations that aren't - enforced. We don't need
[ In Reply To ..]
anymore regulations because only law-abiding citizens obey them; criminals don't. Getting rid of guns won't change the heart and mind of people.

Next will be knifes, axes, or whatever is available.
We have 25,000++ laws and regulations, rules - taxes, and slowly and
[ In Reply To ..]
incrementally they will eliminate the 2nd and other rights...

Like our lawless borders, it's just takes time. Slow and incremental.

I'm getting that monkey movie feeling again...
I know that feeling... - SM

Look at what's happening in Chicago. - sm
[ In Reply To ..]
They have strict gun laws there, but the criminals don't care. They have guns anyway.
So arm everyone in the U.S.? - sm
[ In Reply To ..]

Chicago is rather unique with gang wars and drug turf wars. The rest of the U.S. homeowners don't need guns, AR-15s, tanks, cannons.
"Don't need"???? - SM
[ In Reply To ..]
Wouldn't that be a rather sweeping generalization there?
Tanks? Exaggerate much? - Laura
[ In Reply To ..]
Growing up in the 50's and 60s, my dad would say "guns don't kill people - people kill people." - that was true then - true now....
I have yet to meet anyone with a tank in his backyard......
Local fraternity fired a cannonball into a neighboring frat - thought I'd throw it in
[ In Reply To ..]
and there are fringe groups fighting for any type of equipment they can get their hands on.

I agree people kill people. The problem is the prevalence of guns in society increases the statistical chance of the innocents being hurt.

People also make mistakes, accidents happen, and all those other good sayings.

I still shudder when thinking of everyone's realization that a teenage boy in our town shot his sister in the back of the head (with a hand gun) purposefully. If that gun had not been available, she probably would not be dead. Not for certain, of course, there are other ways of both obtaining gun and hurting/killing her.
Put God back in the schools. I'm sure this - will get deleted. NM

Our State just passed law to - guarantee right of prayer
[ In Reply To ..]
God can be in public schools, just not teachers teaching Bible.

In our state, when I volunteer in the schools, I hear God references everywhere (and I am not being facetious). There are Christian people teaching in the schools. Have a friend who is a pastor's wife who took a job in the teen/baby center at our local high school for kids that don't fit in the other 2 schools. Excellent job for her. God can work in all sort of ways.
What if a Muslim student - wished to pray?
[ In Reply To ..]
And follow their religious rules?

My guess is that where you are is a "safe" Christian zone, meaning there are probably no children from other religions attending, but if there were, how would you feel about them exercising these same rights?
Muslims ALWAYS get their rights honored. - sm

I have absolutely no problem with that - I don't know about

our community. It is a University town where there are a number of other than Christian religions.

article from so-so biased newspaper

has signed legislation intended to protect students’ religious expression at public schools.

The bill signed Wednesday says students cannot face discrimination for expressing their religious viewpoints in homework, artwork and other class assignments. It says those projects must be graded according to ordinary academic standards.

The legislation also says that students may pray while at school and wear clothing and jewelry displaying religious messages to the same extent that other types of clothes are accessories are allowed.

Another part of the bill says that student religious groups shall be given the same access to using school facilities as other kinds of non-curricular groups.

I think allowing prayer and "God" in schools - is fine, but
[ In Reply To ..]
If there are multiple religions to deal with, then you have the situation of separating out kids whose parents don't wish to have the kids hear the stuff about a certain religion, or those whose parents don't wish to have the kids hear anything about any religion.

I would think they should just allow the prayer, but insist on voluntary gatherings only, otherwise the teachers will need to become social workers and religious counselors, in addition to all of their other jobs.
Humanity needs to get into rehab and get over - its ridiculous God obsession.

That's a strawman argument. Like prohibition. - Did society get better? No
[ In Reply To ..]
it created a black market and gangsters. The problem is with people.
Guns are like capitalism, only as good as the people - using them. I know this is
[ In Reply To ..]
not popular on this board, but ever since we took God out of school our society has declined.
What a stinking shame - sm
[ In Reply To ..]
That God seems to be a minority on this board and in American society today.
The belief by various sects that THEIR "god" should - be injected into every facet of - s/m
[ In Reply To ..]
society, including those who worship a different "god", or don't believe in any of those fairy tales at all, is about 99.9% of the evil that is happening right now, worldwide.

Only when society realizes that these beliefs belong in one's own personal heart, and not thrust into everyone else's face, will there be any chance of peace and prosperity on earth.

There's nothing wrong with PERSONAL religious beliefs, but the problem is people take it beyond personal, and try to enforce it amongst others. Which never, EVER works.
Sort of like what - SM

I read your post again. I stand by mine. It seems you are trying to "enforce" your beliefs on everyone else. You are certainly entitled to your opinion, as is everyone else on this planet.

As far as knowing nothing about your beliefs, they are actually quite clear by your post(s).
If you read my post, then you didn't comprehend it. - What I'm saying is nobody's - sm

Would think that since gun lovers are so proud of their second amendment rights, they wouldn't mind when a doctor asks if he/she owns a gun.  And of course this would happen in Florida, where there seems to be more than just a few armed crazies roaming around - George Zimmerman and Michael Dunn . . . ...
