A different perspective on the

Posted: Jul 19, 2014

My own grandmother came over from Poland at the age of 15 (in about 1915) with her 3 YOUNGER brothers. I wonder if she was a "legal" immigrant such as it was in those days. I wonder if she was subjected to such nastiness and hate as we are seeing now.

My other branch of the family was from Ireland, fleeing the potato famine, and we know they were demonized.

My Polish grandma cleaned houses, was a governess, and eventually ended up with her own family and a nice house. She was a registered Republican, spoke broken English, but did speak English. She never took any form of welfare and was against it.

So who's to say there are not future such upstanding citizens in this new wave? Some of us have way too much time on their hands to watch and listen to hate and take it on.

Think of your own family's history and I can almost guarantee you, unless they came over on the Mayflower, they were subjected to this kind of abuse. So think again before you give in to the hate.

This is the same Bill Moyers who blames Syrian - civil war on climate change,

Wonder how Canada would feel if we didn't have a Northern Border.

On the other hand - where did your family come from?

[ In Reply To ..]
And were they persecuted?

Forget about Bill Moyers, PBS, and all the other things right wing media tells you to hate, and think about your own family and how they came to this country and whether they were subjected to this kind of persecution.

Think of the future of those generations already - here, they will be persecuted

by US. We Americans who are in our supposed-to-be "golden years", who have not enough social security (if any), have not been able to save enough to retire on, whose health is beginning to fail, and/or who cannot find anyone who will hire them to continue to work and pay into the tax base. Unless we fix how things are done in the United States job market, WE will be perceived as "The Problem" in about 10 years. THAT is what we should be worried about and focusing on, not a few stray South American kids.

people are persecuted. I was made fun of in school for being fat. Do I still blame those kids? No. I grew in character from it. That happens everywhere and in every country. People are people. Is it right. No. If we are so bad, then why do they want to come here?

Being called fat is a far cry from being persecuted as an illegal, denied political asylum, food and a hopeful way of life. They want to come here for the hope of a better life. Many immigrants become upstanding citizens. If we "let them in," they don't have to become citizens. It is possible to deport if they are arrested.
Then let the ILLEGALS do it - LEGALLY.

avoid being killed. This isn't a typical immigration issue; it's a HUMANITARIAN issue.

I realize you right-wingers don't understand such things as treating someone like a human being, but it's really something you should consider reading up on.
Exactly. It does take months and years and there are plenty of - upstanding immigrants WAITING LEGALLY
[ In Reply To ..]
for their turn to come here.

What about them? You're just going to allow all these ILLEGALs in without due process and those waiting years get pushed to the back of the line? How's that fair?

These ILLEGALS are carrying all kinds of diseases. Look at some of the photos on line...A lot of these ILLEGALS are NOT KIDS. They are teenagers and gang members, and adults, but the bleeding heart people want you believe they're all little toddlers and all little innocent victims of something or other.

Phooey on humanitarianism. The excuses they are giving are baloney and they're lying. A lot of them are mules carrying drugs, too.

SECURE THE BORDERS. STOP THEM FROM COMING. Ship those that are here BACK.

You want to be a humanitarian, then fight to allow the ones who followed the legal procedures to get in and those that are here on green cards or visas and trying to be legalized, do something for THEM. It's ridiculous that this government are such a$$holes. They don't give a dam about people. They're playing politics and looking at these ILLEGALS as future voters of their party. That's what it's all about, nothing else.

Wise the heck up.

There is no work, people are losing their jobs, unemployment is running out, food stamps running out, the post office running out. Businesses closing down. There are no jobs, no food, no nothing. Please don't tell me you care less about our own countries peoples. Hundreds of years ago there were opportunities for people of other countries. There is no opportunities for these people. They were not in danger where they lived. Granted some of them lived in horrible conditions, but there are people here living in horrible conditions too. There re homeless and hungry here. Just where do you think the money is going to come from to feed, house, educate and clothe these people when we can't even do it for our own countries citizens.

They all had their reasons for leaving their home country and most of them were feeling from the same type of situations, but they still had to follow the rules. The government workers at the different ports of arrival all had rules and laws that they had to follow before allowing immigrants in and they had a smidgen of disease or didn't have the right "answers" there were shipped out on the next boat. There was no ifs, ands, or buts.

I only included the article because it - made me think of my family

[ In Reply To ..]
So please don't discredit it because it is from Bill Moyers or PBS or Mother Jones. Just think about your own family.

Yes, I see supposedly they did not accept younger than 16 years, but my grandma either turned 16 or was accepted somehow anyway I guess, with her younger brothers. I see also no diseases, but there were so many diseases they did not know about then anyway.

My grandma actually "lost" one of her brothers, hopefully alive somewhere in the US with his own family and not crushed in a machine or some other demise of the child labor they came to this country to participate in.

It just makes you think is all, and if you don't like the source of the article, don't read it, just think of your own family's history and how they were treated as immigrants.

It's the story of the world. It doesn't mean it's - okay to break the law,

[ In Reply To ..]
and you KNOW people are going to resent some of the illegals, but I blame the government.

When it gets down to survival mode, laws tend - to not matter anymore. And -

[ In Reply To ..]
it's a good reason why the government should be worried - not about a few immigrants who are currently in survival mode, but our entire country of inhabitants, when our wages continue to go down, we lose our homes, we can't find work, we can't afford healthcare. When we all go into survival mode as well, because the 1% at the top have everything and we have nothing, THEN they should start to worry, because that's when the problem of people who don't have enough, versus people who have too much, will hit critical mass.

So not one personal story? - To disclose?

I do not think your ancestors would appreciate your willingness to condemn others from trying to achieve what they all came here for.

Exactly, my grandmother with her - poor English

[ In Reply To ..]
Was incensed at the Spanish language signs she would see. She read the Polish newspaper every day and had Polish speaking friends, yet she did resent that the way was made easier for others who came to America.

What is it that is happening that has your parents so upset? They haven't even let any of these border children in yet as immigrants, have they?

I don't think they are trying to come here illegally, I think they were told that somehow there was a way to get in legally and that is why they are coming in their droves, but obviously mistakenly.
People are angry at the government for - promoting this. We

[ In Reply To ..]
When I say you I'm not directing this at you personally, I'm using the word you in a general sense.

I know, how bout you open your house to all of them every single one of them. Take them all in, kick your own family out, after all people coming here to get something for free matter to you more than your own family.

So invite them in, including the 20 and 30 year old gang members who admit to torturing and killing people The tattoo'd ones. Then tell your children, sorry Bobby or Ginny you will have to go hungry this week cos these people from another country are more important than you are.

If everyone wants this so much then you all open your homes, kick your families out and give everything you own to them.

And while we are at it lets change the rules a little bit. We will let them vote as long as they vote republican. After all that IS what it's all about. Liberals are okay with it cos they know they'll be voting democrat, so we'll change the tune. Not only do you give up your housing and you go live in tentville, but you also now need to give your whole paycheck over to them, make sure they are fed. You can go to the soup kitchens to eat and make sure you give them all your clothes. After all they are all more important to you than our own kids who were born here. In fact lets just all dump our own kids out in the streets and tell them good luck.

I say let everyone who is for illegal immigration let them live with them then, instead of camps. I agree, open your doors, let them live with you. YOU feed them, clothe them and try to find them jobs or welfare. Obama only can think of how to spend the money of hard working tax paying people. That is all he does sit up there and think of how to spend, spend, spend. What the heck does he care? He will be out (THANK GOD) in 2016 getting thousands of dollars a year.
Please, please do some research. - I mean absolutely no offense.

Read the websites from cities impacted by the influx of ILLEGAL immigrants, not just these latest groups, but for decades. Someone posted some San Diego news websites last week. Search for that post or search on Google for local ABC, CBS, FOX, NBC and PBS stations of cities affected by this influx. It takes a toll on local resources. Legal citizens have been victims of crime. Diseases are being reported, but hushed up. There is a wealth of information that you appear to not know about.
I am sure some of the immigrants that came - here when our forefathers did
[ In Reply To ..]
Also were criminals. Such is life. Of course it takes a toll on local resources. On the other hand, many of these new immigrants work and pay social security taxes which they will never see anyway if they are illegal.

I am simply asking for personal stories from your own family history and trying to relate this. I think you are saying this is nothing like that. I beg to differ. Just because we now have hate radio and TV and misinformation gets out quicker and anger and hate can be ramped up faster, that does NOT mean it should be the predominant emotion here just because Rush and Jones tell you so.

I commend Glenn Beck for having at least a little compassion. Apparently, he did ask himself WWJD and realized demonization of children is not the way to handle this.
I don't think we can get through to you. - Our stories matter not to you.
[ In Reply To ..]
I posted above about being first-generation American and about researching resources for information about the negative impact illegals have on local governments. I don't know what more we can tell you. You have your mind made up. We're not talking about compassion either. We're talking about LEGAL v. ILLEGAL immigration. Big difference!!!!!!!!!! Ciao.

As I said, my grandma came here through Ellis Island in 1915. While she was possibly "legal," I see similarities in her situation, being forced to leave her parents and look after her younger brothers at such a young age.

It seems like your family had no trouble getting into the US legally I appreciate that, but I do think for most people either they or their ancestors emigrated in a heartwrenching way in a similar fashion to these young ones.

I apologize, but I'm not going to give out a lot of personal information in this forum. My parents came here legally. They had to have sponsors and a means to support themselves. They had to have proof of medical eligibility. They were here for a period of time on green cards before garnering citizenship. What else can I tell you? That is the same story for probably 99% of LEGAL immigrants. A lot of people couldn't just walk or swim across a border. There were oceans in between their homeland and the US. It is a slap in the face to everyone who came here legally and to the people still waiting to come here legally. Ciao.
My grandfather came here "legally", but had he - lived next-door, instead of an ocean away, -
[ In Reply To ..]
then considering his circumstances (he was alone), his age (15), and his finances (zero money), I'm sure he would have tried his best to cross the border by walking. Actually, he was almost turned down for coming here, but he lied about his age (18) and was able to nail a vacated Steerage Class spot. Not exactly a cruise on the Queen Elizabeth, either.

It's not the Americanthey entered because now - its all run by big business & bribes.

came from Hungary legally. His name is even listed on Ellis Island. I don't think the majority of Americans have a problem with immigration. The problem is illegal immigration. If you want to be a citizen and live in the good 'ole US of A....do it legally! It is NOT fair to those coming to this country or trying to come to this country legally if we allow those to come here illegally and just turn a blind eye to it and/or welcome them with open arms. You just encourage more to come here illegally and that is what we are seeing at the border right now. This administration has turned a blind eye to illegal immigration and now children are being bused in thinking it's A OKAY...and it is okay with this president. However, it shouldn't be okay. Illegal is just that...illegal. It is a crime. We cannot pick and choose which laws to follow. Either we change the laws or we follow the current ones.

My grandparents, both sets, came from Russia - in the early 1900s

[ In Reply To ..]
They landed in Galveston, TX where they were quarantined for a month before released to go on to there destination cities. They were processed legally. They gained citizenship, they learned English and spoke it. They were extremely proud and expected nothing if they did not work for it. They pooled their resources, little that they had, with other immigrants and eventually bought lots of land and prepared it for farming, which provided them with a decent living. Interestingly, they did use a immigrant Mexican family to help with the farming and let them live in a house next to theirs on the farm. My grandparents were very humble and always felt themselves to be second class citizens, being that they were not born in America and had accents.
