Testing tomorrow

Posted: Apr 16, 2014

Hello all,

tomorrow I am testing for an at home MT job. I'm worried beyond worry.  See, I've tested 4 times with other companies, yet not passed their tests.  When I've taken these tests, I feel very confident, then my hopes are bashed. I'm highly experienced! I've been out of work for about 3 years. Has so much changed? Or is there a test secret I don't know? Lol!

I have done every kind of report there is to do, I have been an MT for 25 years. Is there something I don't know about at-home MTs v office based?  Thank you all.

Hi Regina,

I, too have had many, many years experience doing this and was always told I was SO GOOD AT IT (A very fast typist, very accurate, etc).

I was told that I failed the MT test at one company but did very well on their Medical terminology portion.

I just applied at another site, submitted a resume and took their Medical terminology test, which seemed very easy to me!

I was told by E-mail that I scored 47% on it, and the answers I was able to verify online through Wikipedia, etc.

I wonder what is going on, if those of us with so much experience are not passing these tests!

A little known fact about - testing and hiring

[ In Reply To ..]
I know that the two largest companies hire recruiters to seek out new employees. I'm not sure about the smaller companies. The recruiting company places the ad for employment, but that doesn't alway mean the company is hiring. There have been hiring freezes multiple times over the past couple of years. I see postings here all the time where people are out of work, yet they see an ad for help wanted. The MTSO has a contract with the recruiting company and have to pay them anyway, so in this case the recruiters continue to test applicants, but instead of hiring, they collect the test scores and resumes until the company starts to hire again. Also to be considered is the fact that many MTs have been laid off from companies over the past year, and some states require that those employees be called back before another can be hired.

I think that - is common

some places other than the 2 behemoths advertise regularly but no one ever hears back. I think some of those aggregrate job sites just collect jobs posted elsewhere on the net and post them as if they are recent. If you look carefully, they repeat the same ad many times in their list and say things like "posted 30 days ago."

Hey Regina, I think I am in the same boat but I have worked as recently as 1 year ago in the MT world ~ although with the STATE of California..... I think that brought me down as well. LOL Think good thoughts and you will be fine. If it is meant to be, you will be hired!!!! :)

Don't feel bad! I did the same thing. I was - bshel

shocked I didn't pass. I am not a prodigy by any means but, have been doing this a very long time. I don't know what they base the testing on but they must really be into punctuation or something screwy and unimportant. Just my opinion. Hand IN THERE! You just relax and take another one and I'll just bet you do great! I am pulling for you.

I have taken 5 tests in the past year and only passed 1 - with 30 years experience in acute care, the tests were a piece of cake - if I did doubt any, I would check the answer online and find that my first instinct was right. I supposedly flunked 4 of the 5. I asked all 4 to send me the results of my testing and none would - I do believe that my resume revealing my experience led them to look for someone "younger." The next time I send my resume, I am going to take off the first two companies with dates and see if that helps. Good luck!

Do you have a current copy of the BOS? - sm

It has been awhile, but when I tested, I used the Book of Style for every crossed "T" and every dotted "I" and did not have a problem passing tests. I would suggest getting a copy and reading through it to see if you are using the most current rules.

Edited to add: Sorry, I guess I responded in the wrong spot.

I failed a test right after finishing MT training as I did not understand that "verbatim" meant *verbatim.* I was literally doing everything by the book and didn't realize that these companies use every way possible to pay us less. So I was marked off for adding "the," etc. Lesson learned.

The second thing is that experienced MTs are so used to do doing things the way our particular company or their clients want them done. One of my accounts is so cheap that they want no expansions of any type--not even in diagnosis, operation, etc.--those areas in which expansion is standard according to the BOS. One day I was looking at what I was doing and thought I would probably not be able to pass a test based on standard transcription practices because these "shortcuts" are so ingrained in me now. As another poster said, a look at the BOS might help you. Good luck!

Kid's Career TestingApr 27, 2011
This will be quick and this will be funny.  My boy comes home from 5th grade today, explaining how they all went to computer class and answered questions to ascertain their perfect career.  (He tells me his qualifying choices are nuclear engineer, mechanical engineer, etc., -- but that's beside the point).  So, when he gets home, he and his best friend are now at home playing with this career-assigning website.  As a joke, they type in "Strongly Dislike" for every singl ...

God Is Testing Me, My Faith?Jul 06, 2011
What do you think when someone that's going through something horrible says 'God is testing me, my faith'? It's one of the many reasons I doubt there's a God....if there were, and one is a believer, why should they be tested? Sounds like torment to me, and why would someone that loves his children torment them in such a way? Would God (if there is a God) be so insecure that he'd need constant proof of one's faith? I thought God knows everything? So wouldn ...

Santorum: Pre-natal Testing Leads To AbortionFeb 20, 2012
I'm glad Santorum is getting a lot of attention so Americans can see he is friggin nuts. Rick Santorum said on Sunday he believes specific types of pre-natal testing leads to a greater number of abortions. "A lot of pre-natal tests are done to identify deformities in utero and the customary procedure is to encourage abortions," he said. "We know that 90 percent of down syndrome children in America are aborted, so to suggest, where does that come from?" His remarks on CBS's "Fa ...

Ham Q's....need To Know By Tomorrow! S/mDec 30, 2011
Hello all, I have people coming over to my house tomorrow (Sat) at 5 p.m.  I am planning to serve ham, sliced up for sandwiches. It is currently defrosted in my fridge as of today. It is a 10-12 pound half ham, not precooked or spiral sliced (I think.) Here are my questions: Can I cook it in my Nesco roaster instead of the oven? (Never used a Nesco before, have a 6-qt one still in the box!) If yes, how long do I cook it for and what goes in with the ham besides water? (I tried looking o ...

I haven't told my child about Conn.  She is not ready for that tragic reality.
