Pet parent question

Posted: Nov 22, 2013

Any dog owners out there using Vectra flea/tick preventative treatment on their dog? I started using this a few month ago for my dog's monthly treatment. I believe this is her 4th one. She is now done with treatment until April (she does not need it in the winter months where I live). Well I've noticed that a week or so after she gets her Vectra treatment on her skin, that she licks alot and scratches alot and has anal gland leakage. All this lasts about 2 weeks and then seems to go away. I've tried doggie Benadryl for her before as the vet thought she had allergies and had her glands expressed. IMO it is the Vectra causing this. Her previous brand that you just put on her scruff and it ran down her fur never did this to her. She is fine and normal otherwise. My dog is a Black lab/Rott mix. Anyone else have this issue with Vectra? My vet is great but she was not aware of Vectra causing the itching or anal gland leakage. I also checked her fur and skin and see no reaction. She is healthy, happy, a regular dog otherwise. Could it be the Vectra or just allergies? TIA;

I can't say for sure, but it does sound like your dog is sensitive to Vectra.

You might want to try here: http://www.dogforum.com/dog-health/

It's an active site, and they might have more insight for you.

Is Vectra an off-brand product? If so I would not use it.

I live in the South and have Siberian Huskies. I usually use K9 Advantix and buy it on Ebay. I do not use it every month. I use it every 3 months.

Is your dog an outside dog or does he or she stay inside?

I really believe we use too many chemicals on our dogs.

Google it (is vectra safe) - but generally I would not use it

If your dog is having a reaction like this it is a sign that *something* is causing her/him discomfort - and since its a different chemical (cheaper) than the one that did not cause a problem I would not use it.

I agree with the other poster that these pesticides are not good for our pets and if she is licking it that means she is ingesting some of it...

Thanks for the suggestions all... - clb

The previous brand I used I think was Frontline Plus. I just remember that one was messy because I would put it on her scruff and then her fur would be wet for a few days. Vectra is supposed to be a better brand through your vet to prevent fleas, ticks, biting flies, etc from even getting on your dog, not like FL where they land on their skin and then die. This is supposed to be like an invisible repellant. It was a trial anyway and we can always switch back. I will call the vet after winter and ask to switch back. My dog had fleas and ticks on her when she came to the shelter so she has Lymes as well so I have to give her preventative treatment every month. Heartworm prevention too. She gets that tablet year round but just the Vectra in warmer months. I will check more into it though. She is otherwise very healthy and active. Thanks again all for the suggestion. :-)

Maybe she needs anal glands expressed? - Rose

A Parent Who Steals From You...Jun 03, 2011
If your dad stole from you and your husband, would you continue to associate with him? I don't think most would. We have had something go missing before, and we suspected him of stealing it. It was a John Deere lawnmower deck. The lawnmower needed a clutch. We have another lawnmower so we were waiting to fix that one. My dad goes around looking for metal to take to the salvage yards or copper or whatever he can find because he doesn't work. Well, we suspected he took the deck of ...

Am I A Terrible Parent?Dec 14, 2009
I'll try to make this short as possible, but here goes...My DD (19) had Christmas plans that fell through. Her plans were made back in August; she was supposed to go with her "boyfriend" to his family's Christmas and spend 3 weeks with him, across the country from us. We also have a son, a DIL, and a 4-month-old granddaughter that I've seen once and my DH hasn't ever seen...so we made our plans to travel to their home for Christmas (they too live across the country...he' ...

Has Anyone Ever Had To Seperate Themselves From A Parent...Feb 28, 2010
The reason I am posting this is to know if anyone has ever had to basically disown a parent?  How did you go about doing it? Has anyone ever had a parent who was so toxic that they had to seperate themselves from them?  I don't know of a better word to come up with but toxic.  Someone who had no respect for you, your husband or child.   No respect for your privacy.  No respect for your other parent.  No respect basically for anyone, not even themselves.&n ...

Parent Who Is Clingy And AnnoyingJul 26, 2013
Has anyone had any experience with a clingy annoying parent?  I am 36 years old.  My dad is 64.  He and my mom divorced in 2008.  He was cheating.  Well when he has problems with his girlfriend and is not living with her it is like he goes into this very annoying stage where he wants to talk to me on the phone every day multiple times a day.  I have other things to do.  I cannot sit on the phone all the time.  Plus, he is one of those type people that you ...

Anybody Coping With Living With A Parent With Alzheimer's?Jun 28, 2013
I moved mom in with me about a month ago.  I work second shift full time in my home.  Even before I moved mom in, I would see her daily in her home, see she was eating properly, setting her pills out, etc.  She recently had cataract surgery and recovered fine.  We've put her home up for sale and she's none too pleased but I thought she would adjust to living with me.  Our homes are similar, and I made her bedroom in my own look exactly like hers, bath ...

Do I Tell A Parent Her Daughter Is Dating A Teen Who Uses Oxycontin Recreationally?Dec 30, 2009
I would certainly want someone to tell me, but you have to realize I live in an area where a lot of parents allow underage drinking.  This particular mother has given liquor to teens, however, I am quite sure she wouldn't like oxycontin and oxycodone.  I do know this for fact that the kid uses.  My son wanted me to tell the parents and then he changed his mind but after I thought about it, I feel if something bad happened, I would feel I should have said something. Please he ...

If You Want To Find Stable Two-parent Families, Bypass Palin Country And Go To Pelosi May 04, 2010
If you want to find stable two-parent families, bypass Palin country and go to Pelosi territory. by Jonathan Rauch Saturday, May 1, 2010 Can it be? One of the oddest paradoxes of modern cultural politics may at last be resolved. The paradox is this: Cultural conservatives revel in condemning the loose moral values and louche lifestyles of "San Francisco liberals." But if you want to find two-parent families with stable marriages and coddled kids, your best bet is to bypass S ...

Muslim Parent Warns School "We Will Be Majority Soon"Sep 23, 2015
security is needed. The Jersey City Board of Education voted last week not to close schools for the Muslim holiday of Eid al-Adha, one of the most important holidays for Muslims. Sorry To Bug You All Again, But I Have Another Pie QuestionDec 03, 2011
I am making a blueberry pie to take to my stepfather tomorrow, and I thought it would like nice to use a cookie cutter in the shape of a bell and apply that piece of crust to the top of the pie.   If I use a little bit of water to attach it, will it bake to the top crust securely?  A lot of you sound like you are pretty handy in the kitchen!   The lemon sponge pie I made for Thanksgiving was wonderful.  Thanks to the person who suggested the allrecipes.com webs ...

Question ..Feb 10, 2010
I'm always facinated at some people who think all social problems and situations are so black and white.Abortion is here to stay, whether it's legal or not, just like it's always been an option when a woman finds herself facing the impossible situation of an unwanted pregnancy. Wishing it wasn't an option has never worked. However, when a discussion comes up about abortion, we women are strictly divided. Black and White in our opinions. This is a complicated issue. It doesn ...

Cat Question Aug 05, 2011
Don't know if you remember my last posts awhile back about a stray cat we started feeding and took care, gave her shelter for the winter and she had kittens.  We've taken the kittens in and adore them all.  Now...here she is 3 or 4 months later, every once in awhile I'll get a glimpse of her nursing them.  Vet told us milk has to be dried up before they can fix her.  However, she is a stray and she has been going out walking around the neighborhood like she has ...

QuestionMar 22, 2010
Okay, here is a question that I have not seen come up here.  While watching news today this just crossed my mind.  If the government sets an insurance rate you have to pay based upon what you make per year, do they take into account all your other bills, and that sometimes as ICs we don't get any work coming in at times, and then what they set is more than what you can afford (i.e. more money than your paycheck and you still have to pay all your bills).  As ICs I'm sure ...

E-Bay QuestionNov 19, 2013
Hi everyone, I absolutely love Swarovski Crystal, in particular their earrings. I have a couple of pairs that I paid full price for, but they are too expensive. (Earrings run from $60-$300+.) I saw that E-Bay has a really nice selection, and you can just do a Buy Now for way under market price--I'm not into the bidding thing, BTW. Thing is, how do I REALLY know it's Swarovski? Some of their jewelry is signed, and some of those posts say so, but not all their jewelry is signed ...
